Grade 1-2 Egg Drop Challenge

Get ready to design, build, and test your way to an egg-cellent adventure! Can you build a contraption that keeps an egg from cracking when dropped? In the class, students will:
Plan their design and think like engineers
Draw and write ideas
Build an egg protector with the supplies provided
Predict whether the egg will survive and explain why
Test the creation in the big Egg Drop Challenge! Celebrate your results and think about what you could change or improve
Come ready to create, experiment, problem-solve, and have some egg-citing fun!
Grade 3-5 Egg Drop Challenge

Our young engineers will be tackling a classic physics puzzle. Students will explore forces and motion while learning how gravity, air resistance, and impact energy function in the real world. In small groups, they will design and construct a 3D safety capsule featuring a parachute to increase drag and an impact cushion to protect a raw egg during a high drop.
This hands-on project links fundamental physical science to real-world applications, such as vehicle crumple zones and planetary landers. The lesson will conclude with a drop test where students analyze their structural designs and verify whether their payload remained intact.
Grade 6-8 Egg Drop Challenge

Calling all future engineers and entrepreneurs, get ready to design, build, and test your way to an ‘egg-citing’ adventure! Our middle schoolers will take on a different version of the classic Egg Drop Challenge. They will design a contraption that can safely drop from the CAJ cafeteria terrace without cracking the egg payload inside, with a challenge. To make this a true real-world simulation, students must manage a fictional 10,000 yen budget. Different materials brought from home will carry different "tariffs and taxes" based on their weight and environmental impact. (Tariffs and Taxes document will be provided in class). Working in pairs, the winning team will be decided by a combination of egg survival, lowest manufacturing cost, and structural weight!
What to bring: Grade 6-8 students should brainstorm at home and bring a collection of potential building supplies (e.g., small cardboard boxes, plastic cups, bubble wrap, straws, strings, rubber bands, or plastic bags). The school will provide scissors, tape, and eggs.

Grade 9-12 Class: Floating Leaf Disk Lab
with Ms Hohmann in Science Lab Room #301
What if you could actually see photosynthesis happening? In this hands-on investigation, students will use leaf disks to observe oxygen production as plants photosynthesize and learn how scientists can measure the rate of this process. Students will conduct an experiment, collect and analyze data, and investigate how different conditions can affect photosynthesis. Come ready to get your hands dirty and think like a scientist!

9:30-9:50 Registration: pick up name tags for kids at Atrium, outside the CAJ library door
9:50-9:55 Meet teachers in Atrium. Teachers will lead students to their classrooms.
10:00-11:15 Class Time - (parents are free to browse our libraries, hang out in the cafeteria, etc)
11:15-12:00 Egg Drop Challenge - parents may watch and assist, please meet grade 1-8 students outside cafeteria. Cooked eggs will be available for kids.
Lunch is optional; please bring your own food
10:00-13:00 CAJ and Parallel libraries open

Cost: ¥1500 per student; maximum of ¥3000 per family for those with multiple children. Charges will be made to your account.
